Monrovia, November 06, 2019: LLA Chairman-designate attends official groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Raw Water Pipeline in White Plains.
The Chairman-designate of the Liberia Land Authority (LLA), Atty. J. Adams Manobah, Sr., on October 1, 2019, attended the official ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of an Eighteen Million United States Dollars (US$18 million) Raw Water Pipeline.
The project, which is part of the energy project funded under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact with Liberia when completed will replace the original 36-inch diameter pipeline which was destroyed during the civil war with a 48-inch pipeline, according to officials.
The project when finished is expected to improve the country’s water quality and save the Liberia Water Sewer Corporation (LWSC) Seven Hundred and Eighty Thousand United State Dollars (780,000) on electricity costs to pump water to its treatment plant.
The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) forms partnership with developing countries who are committed to good governance, economic freedom and investing in people. The MCC has an established partnership with Liberia to help in the reduction of poverty thus promoting economic empowerment.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, H. E. Dr. George M. Weah, President of the Republic of Liberia, thanked the United States government for the support and used the occasion to welcome for the first time to Liberia, Mr. Anthony Welcher, MCC’s Vice President for Operations.
President Weah further said though it is true that water is life thus clean and safe drinking water is long life. “Our national development plan of the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD) focuses on improving the living standard of all Liberians.” President Weah said. The President further said that when the project is completed, it will also improve the quality of health in the country.
Attending the groundbreaking ceremony were high profile dignitaries from both government ministries and agencies, including the United States Ambassador to Liberia, Madam Christine Elder, Cateri Clement, Resident Country Director of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Mr. Monie R. Captan, Chief Executive Officer of Millennium Challenge Account (MCA), Hon. Duannah Kamara, Managing Director of Liberia Water & Sewer Corporation (LWSC), amongst others.
The project, which is scheduled for completion in June 2020, is being implemented by Denys of Belgium with Nicholas O’ Dwyer of Ireland responsible for the designs, review and construction supervision.
